Danish Pastries: Flaky, Buttery, and Irresistible

Danish pastry

Eric Howey

Danish pastries are a delightful combination of buttery, flaky layers and sweet, creamy fillings. Originating from Denmark but inspired by Austrian baking, these pastries are a favorite at breakfast tables and coffee shops around the world. Whether filled with fruit preserves, cream cheese, or custard, danishes offer a versatile canvas for indulgence.

While traditional danish pastry dough can be time-intensive, this simplified version uses store-bought puff pastry for a quicker route to deliciousness. These pastries are perfect for brunch, special occasions, or just treating yourself to a café-style experience at home.

Easy Danish Pastry Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup fruit preserves or jam (e.g., raspberry, apricot, or cherry)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions:

  1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, mix cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Shape the Pastries: Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 4-6 squares or rectangles. Gently fold or shape the edges to create a border for the filling.
  4. Add Filling: Spread a tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each pastry and top with a teaspoon of fruit preserves.
  5. Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk the egg with water. Brush the edges of the pastries with the egg wash to give them a golden finish.
  6. Bake: Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until the pastries are puffed and golden brown. Allow them to cool slightly.
  7. Optional Glaze: Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with a simple icing made from powdered sugar and milk for a finishing touch.

Enjoy these danishes fresh out of the oven with a cup of coffee or tea for a delightful homemade treat!
